Yesterday we received a notice of suspension for Akeeba Backup. We have been your customer since 2014 and we were shocked by this procedure. If customers don't pay, you are quite entitled to suspend the account, but a gentle reminder, in our view, would have been the right approach and friendly customer service.

We have been in the business of building websites since 2012 and use various Joomla plug-ins. None of the other suppliers have the same approach to extending their licenses.

We would ask you to reconsider the method of reminder most strongly.

The email you received said that your Admin Tools for Joomla subscription was suspended. You still have an active Akeeba Backup for Joomla subscription.

Our subscriptions, just like everyone else's, has a fixed term. That term is one year and you can see it plastered all over our site including each individual product page, the Subscribe page and the My Subscriptions page.

Before April 2022 when you reached the end of the subscription term your subscription expired, as it happens with all other Joomla extension providers. Just like with all Joomla extension providers you would then have to pay full price to repurchase a subscription.

Starting April 2022 we introduced the concept of the suspended subscription. When you reach the end of your subscription term we do not immediately expire your subscription, we suspend it for one month before marking it expired. When the subscription is in a suspended state you cannot use the services associated with your subscription; after all, the agreed upon subscription term is over. You can, however, still purchase a renewal for a steep discount and the renewal will be backdated to when your previous subscription expired. OR you can choose to forego the renewal discount, pay full price and have the newly purchase subscription start counting from the date of purchase, like we did before.

Right now, you can renew your Admin Tools for Joomla subscription for 22.50 Euros (plus tax, if applicable). Before we made that change you'd have to pay 50 Euros (plus tax, if applicable).

You are telling me that you are offended that after 10 years I made a change which allows you to pay 55% LESS to renew your expired subscription? Even though your subscription expired because you ignored both emails we sent you a month and two weeks prior to its expiration date? You are really so deeply offended because we are SAVING YOU 27.50 Euros?!!!

Guys, honestly, this is not the reaction I expected. I expected gratitude at my attempt to have you pay less in this troubled economy, even though it hurts my business and me personally. Instead, I get people who are annoyed that they are paying less. Yeah, you are not the only one. It would appear that you are all conditioned to be robbed blind for no reason.

You know what? I've actually had enough with this. I don't see the reason to lose sales for a reason as stupid as me selling my software much cheaper than I should. Since you all want to pay me more money than you need to I am going to change our fee structures in the next couple months so you can pay more, just like you do with other extension providers. If paying more makes all of you happy then sure, that's exactly what we are going to do. I can't argue with increasing our sales and our per transaction income without expending any effort whatsoever. It's just very sad for me to see that honest business practices are actively penalised by the market. I was aiming for an ethical business. Stupid me for thinking that the world was ready for it.
