I have been using Akeeba for some time now and never had this problem before. I have unlimited storage space and the permissions are set on the tmp folder to 755 as is standard but the backup stops and this is an extract from the log file:

There is no such thing as "unlimited storage". All sites are stored on physical disks. Even when on a virtual RAID array, there is a finite amount of disks with a finite amount of space on each of them. In other words, you'll eventually run out of physical disk space and this is what happened here. Why I am so sure? Software either works or it doesn't. I doesn't have a mind. Since you were using it for quite a time I assume that a number of backups have began taking up a considerable amount of disk space on your server, causing this problem. You can try deleting a few old backup archives and see if it fixes this issue.

Thank you for replying nicholas.

With respect I'm well aware of the limits of storage, what I mean is that on most hosting packages one is limited to a fixed amount whereas my package is unlimited. I have checked with the hosting company and they have confirmed that there is no storage issue. I have also been able to make backups of other sites which are all on the same package (granted I don't know if they are on the same spesific Raid system or not).

I normally make a backup and then transfer that backup to my local machine so that there is never more than one backup on the server at any one time. I have contacted the support guys at my hosting company and there are looking into it as it seems that as soon as the backup reaches 2 gigs it gives the error. I know that this isn't a Akeeba software issue as I backup another site on a different server and it is 3.65 Gigs big.

Thanks for your assistance. When a solution is found, if relevant I will post it here for other's benefit.

Further to me previous post, I came across this thread, http://www.akeebabackup.com/forum/25158/topic-dp1.html, and set my split limit to 2 gigs and the backup then proceeded without issue. Not sure why one works and another needs to be split bt at least the backup has now been made.

Yes, 2Gb is a magic number. Actually, it is the maximum file size all PHP versions can handle, except the Linux 64-bit one. I really didn't expect that you had such a big site :o I am glad you fixed it!
