I have ver 3.3.13 installed. it says that there is an update available to 3.4.2
When I click on the update icon I get a message
"You have to supply your username/password or Download ID to the component's parameters before trying to upgrade to the latest release. The upgrade button will remain disabled until you do that".
There seems to be nowhere that I can enter username/password etc. to move forward.
What am I missing ??

I just tried adding Admintools to another Joomla web site. the hosting company was in the process of moving our site to another server and all of the permissions were set incorrectly.
Needless to say I had problems.
the install sort of completed but now in the Components Tag It shows COM_ADMINTOOLS and all of the icons and text are not displaying correctly. We now get emails like :
PLG_ATOOLSJUPDATECHECK_EMAIL_BODY
If I try to re-install com_admintools-2.2.0-pro I get the following error message :
-1 - An error has occurred.
It was not possible to copy the selected file.

Our hosting company has now supposedly fixed the permissions problems.
Can we just un-install and start again ?

/If so how?

This is a partial installation. Please triple check that you have enough disk space. If you do, the only thing I can tell you is to follow our installation troubleshooting instructions.

Have looked at the installation troubleshooting instructions that you identified.
They seem to mainly relate to ver 1.6
Our site has ver1.1.15 so Akeeba install should run OK according to the docs.
I cannot find a ver 1.5.15 to ver 1.5.25 upgrade patch on the Joomla web site - any suggestions ?

I think you only read the first three paragraphs. The installation troubleshooting instructions cover extensions installation on Joomla! 1.5.15-1.5.25, 1.6.0 Beta 12-1.6.6, 1.7.0-1.7.5 and 2.5.0 up to and including 2.5.3, essentially each and every official Joomla! release and a few betas released over the last 3 years :)

Regarding your other question, there is no upgrade package from 1.5.15 to 1.5.25, but the solution is very simple, once you know it. Download the full Joomla! 1.5.25 installation ZIP file and extract it on your local computer. Remove the installation directory. Upload all of the remaining files and folders to your site, overwriting existing files. That's all!
