Hello there,

Fot about a month now, I have problems updating Akeeba Backup (and also Admintools, but that is another account). I get the a warning and an error.Β

I found out that the only way to overcome this problem is removing the download-id, save the configuration, and then entering the download-id again. But with 60 websites it is no fun to do that on every update ;-)

Warning Error connecting to the server: 403 Before updating ensure that the update is compatible with your Joomla! installation.
You are strongly advised to make a backup of your installation before you start updating. Β  an Error: Error Failed to download package. Download it and install manually from https://www.akeeba.com/download/admintools/6-0-6/pkg_admintools-6-0-6-pro-zip.zip. Failed to download package. Download it and install manually from https://www.akeeba.com/download/akeeba-backup/8-0-6/pkg_akeeba-8-0-6-pro-zip.zip. Β  What to do? Β  Best regards,
Peter

This is a problem with Joomla itself. Kindly do remember that it's Joomla's own code which handles retrieving update information, presenting you with updates, downloading updates and installing updates. Our involvement in the update process is limited to providing a URL with the update information and asking you to give Joomla the Download ID so it can download the updates.

Please consult the documentation's update section where I explain what happens and why. For the far more technical analysis of the numerous problems please consult https://www.akeeba.com/news/1746-working-around-joomla-s-broken-extensions-updater.html

One thing you could do is publish the Installer - Akeeba Backup and Installer - Admin Tools plugins. These will apply the Download ID regardless of whether Joomla screw up the #__update_sites table or not.

Starting with Joomla 4.0 these plugins will be removed and you will no longer entering the Download ID into our software's Options page. Instead, Joomla 4 gives you direct access to the Download ID stored in the #__update_sites using the revamped System, Manage, Update Sites page.

Thank you very much. I followed the steps in the documentation and most of the updates worked. Two out of 60 websites needed manual update via zip-upload.

These two sites are probably getting their downloads blocked by the host, e.g. because of a firewall or proxy. Ask them to allow downloads from https://www.akeeba.com and https://cdn.akeeba.com. Please note that the latter is a CDN, meaning the IP address may change and depends on where in the world the server trying to download something from it is.
