Go to the back-end of your site, Extensions, Module Manager. Select Administrator and look for the "Akeeba Backup Notification Module" module. Please make sure that it is published and that its position is "icon".

Nope, same issue. I believe it has to do something with global config, since into another host/site it displays correctly.

OK, even though I have never run on this problem on a Joomla! 1.5 site, it doesn't hurt to try a workaround. Go to Module Manager, find the module and edit it (click on its title). Do not change anything in the editor page, just click on Save. Does the module appear again now? The idea is that sometimes Joomla! marks the module to by displayed on no page at all. Editing and saving the module somehow resets that.

When I installed the newest version I miss the icon in my control panel. I did what you described above.

I had a website with version 3.3.6 and the notification was available in the controlepanel. I installed verson 3.3.7 pro and the notification is gone.

Please provide me with the following information:
- Exact Joomla! version
- Exact PHP version
- Exact name (and version, if it's not Khepri) of your administrator template
Without them, I can't help as I don't see any obvious reason for the icon module not to appear.

OK, that explains it :) With version 3.3.7 we are enforcing the check for PHP 5.2.7 or later. We have determined that Akeeba Backup will not work reliably with earlier versions of PHP, as we state in our requirements page. When the module detects an incompatible PHP version it will disable itself. The idea is that if the incompatible PHP version causes the backup engine (which is loaded by the module in order to figure out if the backup is up-to-date) to fail with a fatal error, the module would take down your Joomla! administrator page. By disabling itself, it makes sure that this won't happen.

That said, PHP 5.2.6 was released on May 1st, 2008 which makes it three and a half years old. This is like an eternity for software! It was followed by 11 (yes, eleven!) PHP releases on the 5.2.x branch, all of which were solving security issues which can be used to hack your site and your server. PHP 5.2 is already end-of-life since December 16th, 2010. In other words, you are running seriously outdated, vulnerable software on your server. You have to ask your host to IMMEDIATELY upgrade to at least PHP 5.2.17 or, even better, PHP 5.3.8 - the latest supported PHP version at the time of this writing.

I am SHOCKED!!!!!!!! :(

Thanks for your reply, I already sent a message to my hostingsprovider.

Thanks for your time.

You're welcome!

Non need to be shocked. Many hosts do that, especially the cheapest one. They simply install Debian on their machines and do not upgrade their server software if their Linux distro doesn't provide an updated package. Given the very (extremely!) long release cycle of Debian, it's little wonder they're stuck with PHP 5.2.6.

My suggestion: find a responsible host. A good quality host may seem to offer less for more, but in fact they offer you something invaluable: peace of mind. For what is worth, my top 3 of favorite hosts is Rochen, iRedHost and CloudAccess.net. This site is hosted on a Rochen MVS (it's what other hosts call a "VPS"). I never had an issue with outdated PHP releases all those years :)
