When attempting to perform an update of a few sites from J! 3.4.4 to 3.4.5 using Akeeba CMS Update, the component sends a cURL error (see attached screenshot).

The Joomla Updater component that comes with J! works fine.

Joomla! Update doesn't do SSL peer validation, i.e. it doesn't check the validity of the remote end's certificate. This allows is to work even with an outdated cacert.pem or libcurl compiled against an older version of libssl.

On the other hand CMS Update does it properly BUT since the cacert.pem file it comes with –the official one distributed by the authors of cURL– does not include the root certificates required to authenticate downloads from Amazon S3 it causes an error. Do note that Joomla! downloads are now hosted on GitHub which uses Amazon S3 as a download back-end.

Our recommendation is to use Joomla! Update for now. CMS Update will not be maintained in the future. It was designed to be a replacement of Joomla! Update, assuming that future Joomla! versions would still include FOF. Since this is not going to happen I have no reason to maintain it any more.

Thanks Nicholas,

I'll remove the CMS update component from my sites and just use the built-in update.
