Hi,

I know you don't provide this any more but I wondered if you have a copy of the last working version. I loved this tool and now lost due to a device crash.Β

Β

Is there anywhere we can still download it? This would be most appreciated.

Absolute lifesaver Nicholas - thanks you!

Β

How come you got rid of it as this was such a useful tool :)

Once again, thanks

You're welcome!

There are three major reasons I discontinued eXtract

  1. It was written in .NET Framework. Microsoft discontinued it in favour of .NET Core which does not, however, yet support Windows Forms properly. I'd have to learn to use yet another complicated frontend framework. I don't think that's a good use of my time at the moment. Not to mention that there were many loud, rude people who took exception with my decision to use a cross-platform language I can actually write code in for eXtract instead of, dunno, trying to learn Swift and C++/GTK3 from scratch to make macOS and Linux binaries? This was getting to the point where the demands became utterly unreasonable.
  2. It cannot handle JSP (encrypted) files correctly. This is an unfixable issue and has to do with the underlying cryptographic library. I would need to use a different crypto library which means yet another learning curve. Again, I don't think that's a good use of my time at the moment.
  3. eXtract was written back when people didn't really know they could run local servers on their machines. There was an obscure project called XAMPP and a niche product called WAMPserver. And, of course, UNIX neckbeards. Fast forward to 2020. Local servers are commonplace. Most people are comfortable enough to even use Docker containers. This means that running Kickstart on your computer –either web or under CLI– is a perfectly viable option. This makes eXtract obsolete.

Hi Nicholas,

Β

totally understand. Yes just tested on Windows 10 and the form doesn't work etc. However I managed to use it to get myself out of the situation I was in, so thank you for sending it (I basically just needed access to my folders and it still extracts the jpa file which was enough as contained the folders/files i needed). Basically it was all I ever used it for to get access to component files).

Do you know of any other tool out there that would simply unpack the files? I will check out what you mentioned in your response.Β

There are always many 'loud, rude' users who complain. They don't consider what goes in to these things you and others produce. It is worse too when the product being offered is free - that is totally unacceptable. Instead of complaining why don't they consider helping with solutions/support?Β

Once again thanks.Β

Why, yes, of course! Akeeba Kickstart ???? The idea is that you already have a web server set up on your machine. Just put Kickstart and the archive in a folder under your server and run Kickstart. It will extract the archive. Just don't press the Run the Installation button.

Remember that Kickstart only extracts the backup archive. It does NOT restore the backup. The archive contains a copy of your files, a database dump and a restoration script called ANGIE. That's why there's the "Run the Installation" button. It takes you from Kickstart (which extracted the archive) to ANGIE (which restores the backup). If you don't press it you have just extracted the backup and that's all there is to it.

You should also check the advanced options at the bottom of Kickstart's page. You can even tell it which files and folders to skip extracting.

Instead of complaining why don't they consider helping with solutions/support?

Those who can, do. Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach spew ignorance on every comment section on the Internet. (This is not mine, I paraphrased it from someone else).

Hi Nicholas,

Β

well I never knew that about Kickstart - that could unpack the files locally etc. This is brilliant news! :D I shall get rid of the extract now. Thanks for explaining.Β

I don't get the moaners - only recently I watched a terrible attack on one of the Open SOurce developers whereby a user was complaining about what is an amazing product (the developer version is free). I have deep respect for the developers who work tirelessly to produce the standards of work they do. I don't get the mindset of these 'takers' who expect everything for nothing along with the support etc. and have the audacity to complain. I am sure they do this with virtually every component they use. Hopefully Karma will catch them up one day!

I'm glad I had the opportunity to tell you about Kickstart :)

Yeah, I stopped paying attention to moaners. I understand how they tick. They don't feel in control of their life and they try to exert control on someone else. They need a therapy. I have neither the time nor the skillset to be their therapist so I just block and ignore them.
