Akeeba Backup 3.3.a3 EMERGENCY RELEASE. All users of 3.3.a1/a2 MUST upgrade.
We are releasing Akeeba Backup 3.3.a3 as an EMERGENCY RELEASE. All users of Akeeba Backup 3.3.a2 MUST upgrade immediately.
Emergency issue addressed
Akeeba Backup 3.3.a1 and 3.3.a2 had a feature which allowed them to send Super Administrators emails regarding new available updates of the software. In order to limit the load on the user's and our own server we were using caching of the update information. Unfortunately, it turns out that on many servers the caching didn't work causing a request to our server on each page load of your site. This had two unfortunate consequences: 1. our site went down due to excessive traffic and 2. your site went down as the request to our site wouldn't complete within a reasonable amount of time. The new version uninstalls the offending plugins, resolving the issue.
Live Update is temporarily unavailable
On approximately 15:30 GMT, Friday June 3rd we disabled all requests to our update streams. This means that all Akeeba Backup installations will display "Live Update not supported on this server". This is intentional and was necessary in order to regain access to our server and allow your sites to continue operating. An hour later we're releasing Akeeba Backup 3.3.a3 which disables the offending plugins upon installation, permanently working around this issue. Moreover, Live Update is disabled in this version of Akeeba Backup. Due to the low upgrade rate we observe, we expect Live Update to remain unavailable at least until June 15th, 2011 (otherwise, our site and the sites with Akeeba Backup 3.3.a2 would stop working again).
Update instructions for all users
Since Live Update is not available, you will have to perform a manual upgrade. Go to https://www.akeebabackup.com/latest and download the item marked as "Akeeba Backup Professional" (if you are a subscriber) or "Akeeba Backup Core" (if you are using the free version). Go to your site, click on Extensions, Install/Uninstall (Joomla! 1.5) or Extensions, Manage (Joomla! 1.6), then click Browse and locate the ZIP file you downloaded. Then click on "Upload and Install".
If you have Akeeba Backup 3.3.a1 or 3.3.a2, the "System - System Restore Point" plugin is automatically enabled. This will cause Akeeba Backup to try to take a System Restore Point backup during upgrade. This may cause upgrade issues on some servers. In this case, please either click the "Back to regular installer" link in the bottom of the Joomla! Extensions Installer page or disable the "System - System Restore Points" plugin before attempting to install Akeeba Backup 3.3.a3.
