Hi please is there any way to get an email notification about the update of the new version of Akeeba products is out? Seems there was some plugin (System -  An update of Akeeba ... or something like that ) for it but now can't find it.

Thank you

No. We deliberately removed this kind of plugins from our software a while ago. The reason is that the update process is NOT controlled by us. It is handled in its entirety by Joomla itself. It is Joomla which fetches the update information from our CDN, decides if there is an update, marks available updates in its #__updates tables, stores the a copy of the Download ID in its own tables, downloads update files and installs the update files.

Joomla's extensions update code is EXTREMELY buggy. Sometimes it seems updates where there are none, or fails to detect updates when there are actually new versions available. Sometimes it "forgets" the Download ID, failing to download the update. Sometimes it "forgets" to copy all updated files and you need to reinstall the update manually.

I have been reporting these issues for eight years to ten different people in the Joomla project. Nobody cared to do anything and they wouldn't let me contribute a fix either. Worse, they pretended these issues do not exist.

Having a plugin or our software convey the update information returned by Joomla was extremely problematic. Our users and clients falsely believed that it was OUR code which detected and applied updates. We ended up bearing the financial, time and reputation impact of Joomla's shoddy update code. Since we are not allowed to use our own update code — on pain of being permanently delisted from the Joomla Extensions Directory — we decided to remove any plugins which conveyed the update information Joomla determined and stop conveying this information inside our software as well. Moreover, we are now very open about the fact that Joomla is forcing us to use a buggy, subpar solution they refuse to fix. Even when we filed a public issue about these problems we've been reporting for the past eight years we were met with open hostility, barring any productive resolution to these issues.

Since the problems lie with Joomla, not our code, we cannot provide update information within any degree of accuracy. As a result, we are not going to revive these plugins until such time as Joomla finally addresses the issues we've been reporting for the better part of a decade.
