I am getting 524 errors on Cloudflare (times out after 100 seconds) when trying to update global configuration in Joomla administrator.

When I disable Admintools (main-disable.php) the error goes away and I am able to update settings in Global Config. What is strange is that I am able to add articles, edit articles and do most everything else while Admintools is active. It just won't let me make any changes to the Global Configuration. I have even disabled the Admintools generated htaccess file and it still times out if Admintools is active.

The site is running great other than that.

I am not getting any errors on the server that I can find in the Errors console.

Any ideas on where I should troubleshoot.

Components, Admin Tools, Web Application Firewall, Configure WAF, click on the Hardening Options tab. Set "Monitor component configuration" to No. Click on Save & Close.

Did that help?

If so, go back to that page and check what the “Action for configuration monitoring” is. If it's Email it means that your site times out when sending out an email. If it's Block it means that CloudFlare doesn't see the response of your server when Admin Tools blocks the request.

The former can be fixed by reviewing the site's email information in Global Configuration.

The latter I've never seen and I am using CloudFlare, both in our business site and in my personal blog. Therefore I don't consider it likely nor it'd be something I could help with.

So it won't let me change that setting. It keeps going to the 524 Cloudflare error. I guess I need to update that directly in the file somewhere? Also there is a monitor global configuration. Should I set that to NO, as well?

I was able to fix the issue by switching from SMTP mail to PHP Mail in the Global Configuration. Once I did that I could even keep both monitor check boxes in Hardening Options ticked.

I am glad you got that addressed. Have a great day!
