Description of my issue:

I have a J4, I saw on MYsites updates page, to remove FOF404 Also Akeeba Frontend Framework (FEF), after removing FOF404 im stuck on return to dashboard. Cleared cache etc and was able to log on again but then it returns.

Saw a ticket here to check and remove some admin tools folders but they dont exist.

Easy way to fix this?

You still have Akeeba Backup 8 installed. You are still trying to access it, despite the fact you were told it's not meant to be used with Joomla 4, it's just minimally compatible to allow you to upgrade from Joomla 3 to Joomla 4. You should have removed it before removing FOF, as it was asking you to do in a really massive message at the top of the page ever since you upgraded your site to Joomla 4. As things are right now you are stuck. You cannot install FOF on Joomla 4.1, you cannot uninstall Akeeba Backup 8 without having FOF 4 installed and you cannot downgrade Joomla.

Before I tell you how to extricate yourself from the mess you created let me point out that Akeeba Backup 8 has had a massive message since August 17th 2021 which told you to install Akeeba Backup 9, then follow the instructions appearing at the big message at the top of Akeeba Backup 9 to migrate your settings and uninstall Akeeba Backup 8. You installed Akeeba Backup 9, alright. You completely ignore the really big messages at the top of both versions of Akeeba Backup.

Now that you have put yourself between a rock and a hard place here's the far more complicated process you need to follow.Download FOF 4 from our site's Download page. DO NOT try to install it!

  1. Extract the ZIP file you downloaded.
  2. Rename the fof folder to fof40
  3. Upload that folder in your site's libraries folder. The goal is to have a folder libraries/fof40 on your site.
  4. Log into the backend of your site.
  5. Go to Components, Akeeba Backup for Joomla. This is Akeeba Backup 9.
  6. LOOK AT THE INSTRUCTIONS AT THE BIG BOX AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE. If it tells you to migrate your settings do that first. If it tells you to uninstall Akeeba Backup 8 do exactly what it tells you to do.
  7. After uninstalling Akeeba Backup 8 you will no longer have an "Akeeba Backup" menu item under components. You will only have the Akeeba Backup for Joomla! menu item.
  8. Delete the folder libraries/fof40 you created in step 4.

OK thanks for the reply

when I got to libraries on ftp it had a fof40 folder already, I noticed some files missing. So I renamed that and uploaded the one from your download page from the zip file

Now I can access the back end again properly.

It did show me I have Akeeba 9 and When tried to migrate I got this error

"The settings migration failed to complete. You may have to manually import your backup profiles and / or transfer and import backup archives."

So went to delete all Akeeba items, got a warning about missing things but it removed it all, I renamed the fof40 folders and  Akeeba and all warnings are gone.

I downloaded and installed Akeeba 9 for Joomla 4, its all ok now, I then removed the fof40 old folders

All is good now thanks
