Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the forum before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Joomla! version: (1.63)
PHP version: (5.2)
MySQL version: (5.0)
Host: (godaddy)
Akeeba Backup version: (Kickstart 3.3)

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue.

Description of my issue:
After restoring my site from godaddy to my local machine (and changing the configuration file) the site works normally on the front end (all links and pages appear properly) but I get a blank page when I try to log onto the back end. No log screen- just a blank page. Kickstart did not return any errors. The same thing happens with two different archives downloaded. I don't see a log file to upload for Kickstart.

Please supply us with more information about your local setup. Are you running on a Mac or PC? What local server are you using: MAMP, WAMP, XAMPP, Other? What versions is the local site running of MYSQL, PHP?

Do you have a .htaccess file inside the main directory or the admin directory? If you do, move it to another directory. This could be a livesite configuration issue in the .htaccess file or other directives you have in that file. Your SEF URL's may not work at the beginning on the front end, but if you can login to your site's backend, then it is likely something in the .htaccess file.

Also, are you running Admin Tools on this site as well? Just needed to know that as well as it could be factoring in to the equation if you have it running too.

Thanks!

Sorry for the omission of this information.

I'm running XAMPP for windows 1.72. Windows 7

Server: localhost via TCP/IP
Server version: 5.1.37
Protocol version: 10
MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)

Web server

Apache/2.2.12 (Win32) DAV/2 mod_ssl/2.2.12 OpenSSL/0.9.8k mod_autoindex_color PHP/5.3.0 mod_perl/2.0.4 Perl/v5.10.0
MySQL client version: 5.1.37
PHP extension: mysqli
I'm also running Admin Tools.

My .htaccess file is in the root folder.

Just to be clear, I can't log into the backend but the frontend appears normal with all links OK.

Thanks for the extra information. A few more things - Are you able to login at GoDaddy on the backend? I know that's an obvious question, but it is one I have to ask. Also, when you say you cannot login, what happens? Are you able to get to the login screen or are you not able to get to the admin login at all? When you go there, exactly what happens? Details are important.

In this process, let's just test to see if anything happens when you rename the .htaccess file. If there is a "rogue" statement that only affects the admin directory, then removing the file should make you able to get into the backend. The admin tools system does have the htaccess maker and other things that could be interfering.

In the root of your site, please rename .htaccess to htaccess.good.
Once that has been renamed, please try to login to the site. If you can get in, please reply and attach a copy of the htaccess file you renamed to your reply. We can see what is in the file and give you an idea of how to further resolve the issue if it is the problem.

Thanks for your patience! We are trying our best to help you resolve your issue and get your local copy up and running.

Yes, I am able to login on Godaddy backend.

When I try to log in to the back end on my local machine, I get a blank page, nothing on the page, no errors, no status bar message.

I renamed .htaccess and there was no change. Still do not see the login on the backend.

When I try to login with Firefox I get the blank page. With Chrome, I get an HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.

Hi!

Blank pages are hidden PHP errors. Following Phil Taylor's advice, please edit your configuration.php file and append the following two lines after the final closing curly brace ( } ) and before the final ?> closing tag:
ini_set( 'display_errors', true );
error_reporting( E_ALL );

Then, visit your site's back-end again. It should print out an error message. Please copy and paste it here.

I added the lines but still get a blank page for backend login. Front appears normal.

I attached the configuration.php file in case you want to check it.

The attachment never came through, but it isn't required anyway. I begin to suspect that this may not be a PHP error, but a problem with your .htaccess or php.ini settings. Please try following all of the instructions in our post-restoration troubleshooting guide. According to my experience, it covers 99% of the otherwise unsolvable problems you get on a restored site.

OK,

I have another site that I created on the local machine before moving it to the server that is working properly.

I’ve been through the troubleshooting document.

1. Memory_limit =128M
2. php_value, php_flag and AddHandler are not present in .htaccess
3. rewritebase is commented out in both working site and non working site on the local machine.
4. Httpd.conf has a line β€œLoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so” I believe this module is working since the other site runs.
5. Live_site line is correct.
6. I modified the php.ini to php.ini.bak no change. I did not find another in the administrator directory.
7. I don’t have Virtumart or DOCman installed.

The only other plausible explanations left are:
1. Do you have any software with encrypted files, i.e. requiring Zend Loader or IonCube Loaders? These are not shipped with most local server setups, therefore such software will cause this kind of issues.
2. Your local server is running PHP 5.3 whereas your live server is running PHP 5.2. Many extensions (components, modules, plugins and templates) are not fully compatible with PHP 5.3 as of this writing. Such an incompatibility may cause a blank page and not return an error message even when you set the error verbosity to maximum. However, they always generate an error message in your server error log. Maybe you should try accessing your site's back-end, then take a look at the server error log (even local server packages keep one; ask their support forums for the location) and copy here the 10 most recent lines (the leftmost columns contain the data and time).
3. Maybe one of your extensions stores absolute URLs or paths and fails when transferred to a new location. Just like above, this should produce an entry in the server error log.
4. In rare occasions, we've seen incomplete backups or incomplete restorations. In those cases, not all files have been transferred and cause an error. Again, an error message is written in the server error log.

So, the only way to be absolutely certain what is going wrong is to visit your site's back-end (so that the error occurs and produces a log entry), find the server error log and copy the latest 10 lines here.

OK.

Here is the access.log for Apache. The error.log is not indicating any errors. That is posted as well.

Thank you for the log. Now I know that it is not a PHP error, it is not a. htaccess issues there is only one thing left: index.html. Check your administrator directory. If there is a file named index.html, please delete it. Does this work?
