I created a fresh installation of joomla! using fanstico on my webhost's server. I then uploaded the kickstart.php, and the .jpa backup file to that directory. When I click on "Start" (at mysite..com/kickstart.php) , it processes for a while, and then gives me a 500 error. Am I using this properly? Do I need to install joomla! beforehand as I did, or should the backup and the kickstart.php go in a blank folder? Perhaps I am doing this properly and just need to tweak settings. Any help appreciated. Thanks

You do not need a working Joomla! installation on the site that you are restoring. An existing installation can cause permission problems in some cases, where kickstart can't extract over an existing file. That doesn't sound like what is happening here.

The first thing is to check your kickstart.php and backup archive and make sure the permissions are set to 755. Some servers will throw a 500 error if the permissions are any higher than that.
