5.Finding your voice

Writing –or rewriting– content is more than just putting words to your thoughts. Which words you choose, how you construct your sentences, and the overall flow of your content can dramatically change how the same information is perceived by the person reading it. That is, in short, the tone of voice you have chose for your content.

When you ask the AI to generate or rewrite content, it will default to a generally neutral to conscientiously helpful tone of voice in most cases, though some models may have different presets (Microsoft's Phi models tend to be more "office-drone formal" than neutral, for example). This tone of voice may not match the "vibe" you want to have on your site.

AITiny comes with 40 Tone of Voice presets. Each one yields different results given the same input. You can always check the samples for each Tone of Voice given the same input, using the same model, to get a better idea of how they translate to real world usage.

In the unlikely event you cannot find a tone of voice preset which matches your intentions you can choose the None preset and introduce your tone of voice instructions in the system prompt - either the overall system prompt (applying to all features), or the system prompt of a specific feature.

When you decide to do that, you need to include the characteristics you want to express, such as formal, casual, friendly, assertive, empathetic, or humorous.

Moreover, you should describe how this tone should influence the writing style and content. Some good points to include are:

  • What is your target audience?

  • What is the purpose of communicating with the target audience?

  • Include a (short) sample of previous content which demonstrates the style you are aiming for.

  • To further narrow down the tone of voice, you can include a number of words of phrases you want to include or exclude from the content.

Here's an example for doing tech support:

I want a tone of voice which is clever, empathetic, and friendly for an audience with low to medium technical ability visiting the site to get solutions with problems they are facing using our Joomla extensions. The communication would utilise the first plural person ("we") to show that the brand is speaking directly. Do not use technical terms such as extension, plugin, or CMS; instead use more relatable terms such as software and web site. The audience must feel welcome, heard, and cared for. The communication should bear a sense of patience, and understanding the audience's perspective and challenges.

The same result as this example could've been achieved by using the Empathetic Encourager tone of voice with a modified System Prompt which describes the exact use case of the site and the intended target audience. That is to say, if you are unsure if a preset tone of voice suits your needs, you should first start by adjusting your system prompt to tell the AI what your exact use case is before going into the trouble of trying to set up your tone of voice from scratch.
