Description of my issue:

Hi Nicholas,

For the Password Protected Admin tool, is there a way to have more than one User ID & Password? I need to setup user IDs for multiple admins. Currently I'm using my host's cPanel tool to do this, but I would prefer to use your tool if it can enter more than one User ID & Password.

Thanks,
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Even though this is generally possible, you can't do that through Admin Tools. The first thing you could try is using your hosting control panel's directory password protection feature on the administrator directory. Usually, these tools allow you to set up multiple username/password pairs.

If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, you can try adding more user/password pairs in the .htpasswd file created for you by Admin Tools inside your administrator directory. The format of the file is:
username:passwordHash
The trick is how to calculate the passwordHash which is a hash of your password, not just your password in plaintext. The only way I know if is using the command-line htpasswd programme. However, it seems that on some Apache installations you can just enter your password in plaintext and it will usually work.

Thanks Nicholas. For now I'll just continue using my host's cPanel to keep it simple. I really like (and trust) your tools and was just hoping to use your tools to do all the admin & security work in one place. Maybe someday when you're bored and have nothing better to do, you'll enhance it to manage multiple user IDs. ;)

Thanks for the great tools!

It's already quite complicated trying to explain to people how password protection works. If I try to allow them to manage multiple user/password pairs, I am pretty sure it'll cause havoc. That's why I didn't implement multiple users for the password protection in the first place ;)

Yes, I can only imagine what you go through. Thanks for doing it.

Take care,
