Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? yes
Joomla! version: 1.7.3
PHP version: 5.2.17
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: Lunarpages
Admin Tools version: 2.2.a3

Description of my issue:
update from 1.7.3 > 1.7.4 yielded the following error:
ERROR: Could not upload administrator/components/com_content/views/articles/tmpl/modal.php
I logged out and tried again and got the same error.
I used admintools to repair permissions an to repair databases.
Still the same issue.

Then I inadvertently clicked "Reload This Information From The Server" and now it only offers "Reinstall 2.5" even though in the version info it shows that it's still at 1.7.3.

Hello Virginia,

Thank you for posting to our support ticket system. Your request looks like one of those frequently asked on our site. We have already documented its solution and, based on your input, we are not sure that you have already read that solution. Therefoew, we kindly request to take a look at the following troubleshooting/documentation page(s) and carry out the instructions outlined therein. If these instructions don't work for you, please let us know of the exact steps you've tried on your site so that we can better help you.

Troubleshooter article [https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/troubleshooter/admintools.html#atjupdate]I can not upgrade my Joomla! version[/url]

Note: Regarding the "Reinstall" label, this is normal. One of the first files copied during the upgrade is the version file. Joomla! now loads this file and Admin Tools thinks you have already upgraded to 2.5.0, hence the "Reinstall" button label. Besides cosmetics, there should be no other problem with that button.
