Is there any way to modify the emails coming from Admin Tools such that the one for login failure gives the attempted UserID? I'd like to get that information so that I can take proactive action on UserIDs that I recognize.

I think that I've found out how to do what I want.  I added a line to the email template like this "Attempted UserID: {USER} ".

That's the way, and you get the user in the form "username (Full Name <[email protected]>)". Of course, it only works if there is a user logged in. When nobody is logged in this will be replaced by "Guest".

You mentioned that if the user was not logged in then the value of {USER} would be GUEST. Is there an option whereby if the user isn’t logged in but fills in the USERID field but fails the password or doesn’t enter the password then the {USER} returns what was entered into the UserID field?

You are thinking about what happens when “Treat failed logins as a reason for blocking the request” is set to Yes. Right below it there's the option “Log usernames” which you can enable to do something similar to what you ask.

Hint: Click on the “Toggle Inline Help” button in Joomla's toolbar to see the inline help which explains what each option does.
