I am developing a website for a community of people working on genealogy. I would like to use a web-based genealogy app (TNG) to collaboratively add and publish our family information. The perfect scenario would be for a member to login to our Joomla website and then be able to access the information displayed (through in iFrame?) without having to navigate to another subdomain website. However, we do not want people to be able to access the genealogy app without first signing in through the Joomla web site.

I am a Akeeba Admin Tools for Joomla! user, but I am not a security expert or programmer.

Bottomline question: Is there a secure way that someone with my skill set can access the genealogy program from Joomla in a way that is compatible with Akeeba Admin Tools Pro security features, or do I need to hire a Joomla developer?

None of that is really up to you and your site. The external application has its own authentication and access control which cannot be substituted by Joomla's own functions. If someone has written a Joomla–TNG bridge (in the same way people have written Joomla–phpBB bridges) you might essentially have synchronised user databases, i.e. you do all the user management in Joomla, not in TNG, and the usernames, emails, and passwords remain in sync between the two systems. If such a thing does not exist it's going to be a quite expensive bit of development. The cost for implementing a bridge from scratch is in the neighbourhood of several thousands of US dollars.

Thank you, Nicholas. I've tried to interest Joomla developers in tapping into the genealogy market, but so far no takers. :-)

I am not surprised. Genealogy in and of itself is a very niche market. Its intersection with Joomla is barely existent. I think that in the last 17 years I've been publishing software for Joomla there have only been two people, including you, who were trying to have a genealogy site for their family beyond a rudimentary collection of articles documenting the ancestors.

Good luck!
