I am managing three sites that are hosted by the same company (Devon Webs) using the same package.  All are Joomla 4

The first one I created from scratch on their servers using J4 and used the feature that provides the extra security feature when logging in to the Administrator. I thought I used Password Protect Administrator to do this, but when I check the control panel settings I can see nothing that suggests it is active. However, I get the sign in window and it works OK.

The two other sites were migrated from other hosting companies and converted from J3 to J4.  Both had used the same admin password feature.  On moving to the new host the feature no longer works (although I can access the site).  The .htaccess files have migrated and appear to be in place but cannot see any obvious code to drive this.

Assuming the problem with the .htacces file, should I delete and start again, or is there a better way?

Neither Admin Tools nor your host do anything magic. We just use a feature built into Apache. As always, knowing how something works helps approach is objectively rather than superstitiously. You can find out how password protection works here:  https://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/howto/htaccess.html

So, here's what to do.

Delete administrator/.htaccess and administrator/.htpasswd

Go to Admin Tools and apply the administrator password protection to regenerate these files.
