Hi there,

I have a question concerning the PHP Exception Mails.

We have them active on all our sites and they all send the mails to the same email-address.

On Saturday there was a plugin update which was automatically installed through Panopticon that led to backend and frontend not working anymore and giving a php error.

So everytime someone visited one of our clients' pages there was an exception mail send. That resulted in multiple ten thousands mails and therefore our hoster needed to clear the queue manually several times and then created an htaccess protection on the websites with the most traffic. We totally understand the behaviour of our hoster. It was to protect all other clients on the server from receiving no mails anymore.

So I wanted to ask if it would be possible to integrate an option in the settings of Admin Tools for the exception mail to be only sent once a day (of course only if it is the same error)?

Our hoster told use to deactivate the mails but I really want to get noticed if there are php exception. If only one mail is send that would prevent the email server from getting overwhelmed.

Kind regards, Tanja

We can't really do that because we'd have to start tracking which exceptions are raised. We'd still need to be able to send you emails for different exceptions, right? By the time you do that youre better off implementing a real off-site exceptions logging and tracking system, eg send everything to Sentry. That's a completely different thing.

I'd recommend a systemic adjustment instead. Send exceptions emails to the on-call email address, and maybe use an automation to raise the alarm if the same site raises more than 10 exceptions in a minute. That would indicate a drop everything/ wake up in the middle of the night to deal with this type of emergency.
