I wrote this mail to the support of Balbooa

Hello,
Unfortunately, I can't say how long this problem has been around, except that it was already there before the “PHP bug.”
I've been using the Gallery in Album Mode on my test site for a long time now
https://test.cco.lu/index.php/en/medien-gb.html
No matter which year or album I click on, thumbnails are no longer displayed. When I hover my mouse over the page, I can see that placeholders are there, but nothing is displayed. I’ve also tried regenerating the thumbnails in various albums, but without success.
What could be causing this problem, and how can I fix it?
I’m using Joomla 6.2.0 with Akeeba Admin Tools Professional 7.9.3 and Gallery 2.5.1.2, php 8.4

Best Regards,

Stefan Paul

They send me the following answer:

Hello Stefan,

We can see the following error in the browser console:

GET https://test.cco.lu/bagallery/bagallery/gallery-3/album/category-1-Ollem_1962.jpg 403 (Forbidden)

Please check your server settings and permissions for the bagallery directory and the image files.
Also, check whether .htaccess, ModSecurity,
or any security extensions are blocking access to these files.
If the issue persists, please contact your hosting provider to investigate
why the server returns a 403 Forbidden error for these images.

With the attached Picture.

Unfortunately, I'm not exactly an expert on the admin tools.

I installed them on recommendation after my website was hit by some extreme attacks.

I left them “out of the box.”

I'm too afraid to mess around with the settings in case nothing works anymore afterward.
Could you please help me configure the settings so that the gallery works normally again?

Best regards,

Stefan Paul

The 403 error Balbooa saw is, in all likelihood, caused by the .htaccess Maker's Server Protection feature in Admin Tools, and it's quick to fix. By default, Server Protection only allows direct access to a small number of known Joomla directories, so the thumbnails in bagallery are blocked. Nothing is wrong with your files or permissions, and you can't break your site by following the steps below.

  1. In your site's backend, go to Components, Admin Tools, .htaccess Maker.
  2. Find the option titled Allow direct access, except .php files, to these directories.
  3. Click the green plus icon to add a new line and type bagallery (no slashes).
  4. Click Save and Create .htaccess in the toolbar.
  5. Clear your browser cache (or open the page in a private window) and reload the gallery page.

This allows access to the files in the bagallery folder and everything below it, except .php files, which remain blocked. That's what you want here, since the gallery only needs to serve images.

If you'd like to double-check before changing anything, the request that fails with 403 should not appear in Admin Tools' Security Exceptions Log (Components, Admin Tools, Security Exceptions Log). That is consistent with the block coming from the .htaccess file rather than from Admin Tools' Web Application Firewall.

We believe this is the cause based on the URL in the error, but we can't be absolutely certain without seeing your site. If the thumbnails are still missing after step 5, please let us know and we'll look at the next steps with you.
