I've had this come up on 2 sites now. I have the admin login set so it uses a link like

http://domain.com/administrator/?specialword

If I use that link without the www, it frequently redirects me to the home page of the website (front end) taking me out of the joomla admin panel. For example after I save an article or module. Also in the admin tools component, when I click Parameters, it pulls the home page up in the popup box.

So far, if I use the www version of the link I haven't seen any problems.

Is this normal? Or is there something I can change to avoid this. Before installing admin tools I could access these sites with or without www in the admin link.

Have you enabled Redirect www and non-www adresses? If you have, for example, enabled redirect non-www to www it will only work when you use www. That's how it is for me anyway :) If I type "domain.com/administrator?specialword" it will redirect to "www.domain.com". I think this is normal, but maybe we should wait and see what the pros say :)

Edit: Actually I get a 404 not found if I try to access administrator without www.

Within admin tools I don't have any redirection set up on either of those sites. But in cpanel on one of those I'm redirecting non-www's to www. The other one I have no redirects in cpanel either, so that doesn't seem to matter.

Ok I have no idea then. Perhaps in the System Configurations tab, the Host name for HTTP / HTTPS requests, do you have www.domain.com there or just domain.com?

vickiwatson
Where is that? Are you talking about a setting in Admin tools?

Sorry, yeah in the Admin Tools component, in the .htaccess Maker

Keep in mind I have no idea if this has anything to do with your problem, I am just guessing - but it might be worth trying :P

humdum, you're spot on. These are the exact things I was going to ask myself. There seems to be a redirection happening from non-www to www which drops the query string of the request. The potential reasons are exactly the ones you mentioned.
