Description of my issue:

Hi I am having problems with my website - I'm getting a 500 server error when I visit the home page of the website,
but other pages are ok. This has happened since yesterday afternoon. The main reason I'm posting here is that I upgraded Akeeba Backup and Tools a couple of hours before this started happening, the only other thing on the website I changed was adding FTP details to the Joomla configuration section.

I have tried removing everything from .htaccess and even reverted back to the default Joomla htaccess, but still I get the same error.

I have the most recent Akeeba versions working with the same settings on another joomla website with the same host and it's fine.

Yesterday about 2 hours after just upgrading Backup and Admin Tools, I got the following server error: PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 16 bytes) in /home/sites/xxxxxxx.co.uk/public_html/libraries/joomla/database/database/mysql.php on line 462

I have gone through methods such as adding memory_limit=64M to the php5.ini file, but no joy.

This error has happened a lot in the logs ever since. I obviously urgently need to correct this, can anyone offer any advice?

I did run the fix permissions feature...would this cause the problem?

I have found that there is a module on my home page called: mod_jcalpro_latest_J15 ... when this is disabled the home page loads ok again. Obviously I want it enabled though. Because this issue has happened after an Admin Tools upgrade I assume it's related. How can I troubleshoot this to see if Admin Tools is causing issues?

Your problem is that you are running out of memory. Do note that your server's memory limit is 134217728 bytes = 128Mb. If unpublishing the Jcal module resolved this issue for you, it means that it was the one consuming vast amounts of memory. Admin Tools' plugin (System - Admin Tools) only consumes 0.5-1Mb of memory, unless you have a humongous list of IP whitelist/blacklist. The only advice I can give you is to prune the IP white-/black-lists in Admin Tools back-end.

Also note that consuming a full 128Mb of memory per page load indicates a vastly overloaded website. I'd suggest reworking some aspects of your site so that it consumes less memory. One good start is to uninstall unused extensions and disable any plugins which are not required for the correct operation of your site.

Finally, if you are using the Akeeba Backup Lazy Scheduling plugin please disable it. It is deprecated due to several issues it causes and will be removed from the next version of Akeeba Backup.

Thanks for your time on this specific issue Nicholas, great advice which I'm sure will help others. Having identified that specific JCal module was causing the problem I looked into it a bit more to see if there was any link to Admin Tools, but as you said, the error message implied it wasn't.

Somehow my client had added a recurring event which had created 45000 records in the database! I have yet to find out how, but the fact that it happened around the time that I upgraded admin tools made me wonder if there was any relation to the initial problem. But the gap between the upgrade and the issue happening did make me think that it may not have been an issue with Akeeba!

Anyway thankfully issue now resolved, I just need to stop it from happening again, but that's nothing to do with Akeeba Backup and Admin Tools, which continue to be my favourite Joomla extensions!

45k records trying to load in a module... Yes, I guess that will deplete your RAM :D I'm glad it's working now :)
