Description of my issue:

My Joomla site was blank in the front end and the backend had the following error:

parse error: syntax error, unexpected ':', expecting ';' or '{' in /home/customer/***/public_html/plugins/system/backuponupdate/backuponupdate.php on line 226

I contacted Siteground and they said they had to change the php to 7.2 and then it functioned properly. This was before I updated from Joomla 3.9.26 to 3.9.27 and Admin Tools and Akeeba backup to the latest update(they were up to date prior to this last update). I then tried to go back to php7.3 and had the blank page again.

Can you help troubleshoot this please?

Um, what they are telling you from SiteGround doesn't make sense. The line in question is:

private function loadTemplate($layout, array $params = []): string

The message complains above the : string suffix. However, this is standard PHP syntax which has been available since PHP 7.0, released in December 2015 and definitely works on PHP 7.2 (minimum supported version and earliest PHP version we are testing with), PHP 7.3 (currently recommended version and the one with primarily test with), 7.4 (used on the site we are having this conversation) and 8.0 (the version we develop on).

The problem must be that even though you are selecting PHP 7.3 the actual PHP version being applied is PHP 5.6 or older. That would be a hosting issue. Please ask SiteGround to make sure that when they enable PHP 7.3 they really ARE enabling PHP 7.3 — they can check with a file running phpinfo() — and not PHP 5.6 or earlier.
