My websites are on a shared server on a reseller account. The I/O limit is 8MB/s but Akeeba keeps working faster than that. This is ok for once a day backups, but when I've been working on a development site recently and made several backups in succession (e.g. when testing upgrading from J3 to J4) I've had the whole domain grind to a halt.

Is there a way to slow it down, please? I've been through the configuration and documentation and can't find anything suitable.

Thank you.

[BTW, the 'View' links that pop up next to the 'Related Results View them first' don't go to the related results, they all go to https://www.akeeba.com/support/akeeba-backup-3x/new.html#]

Go to the Configuration page of the backup profile and scroll all the way down. In the Fine Tuning settings you can find the timing settings. To make the backup slower you will need something like this:

  • Minimum execution time: 5 seconds
  • Maximum execution time: 2 seconds
  • Execution time bias: 50%

The backup runs for a time period that's between Maximum times Bias and Maximum i.e. 2 x 50% = 1 second to 2 seconds. The remainder of the time to reach the minimum execution time (if it's not already reached) is spent “sleeping” (doing nothing). In this case it would be the other 3 to 4 seconds. Therefore these settings above create a duty cycle of 20% to 40%.

You could even go with min/max/bias of 5/1/50 but that would probably be too slow to be practical. Your backup time would increase 10 times, possibly more, since the allotted time to do any productive work is very low and borderline impractical..
