Hello!

Can we expect this feature to be back in soon ?

dlb
No, I'm sorry, there are no plans to bring back the tar.gz format.

The tar format is not hard to work with, but the gz part is a memory hog and is very difficult to work with under php. In addition, it uses a third party library. We know there is a bug in it regarding file names containing spaces. So the options are to fix someone else's library or Nicholas has to write his own. Either way, that would burn a lot of development time on a feature that not many of our users use.

Hello!

That explain why it so fast even with 2.2 gig test I ran, no problem can alway change the archive to upload and extract If I want too

dlb
Be careful of a 2.2 Gb archive! On a 32 bit operating system, there is a 2 Gb file size limit. If your backup is greater than 2 Gb, you need to split the archive so that each piece is less than 2 Gb. The current kickstart can't handle a backup where the total size is greater than 2 Gb, those files require special handling.

Oh I have no worry my server has 8 gig of ram 4 core and 64 bit OS was only a test and was fast took only 6 1/2 min.

dlb
OK, 64 bit operating systems have a ridiculously high file size limit.

In the beta release I will have a "HyperCompression" feature for the JPA format. It will chunk each file and compress each chunk separately. While it will be more CPU intensive than straight JPA, it will result to compression rations comparable to the tar.gz format. So, your main concern being the size, this should cover you :)
