First off I am grateful of all your Jompack development and quite happy to purchase you new commercial product. I made a backup in Akeeba that was 8.2 gb compared to 3.4 gb in Jpack. in Jpack I was able to exclude subdirectories differently than in the Alpha Akeeba. I think I am not doing it properly?
when I go to "File and Directories exclusions" I see the default cache highlighted in red on "skip directory" and "skip files" radio button
I clicked on all three radio buttons in front of the /dev subdomain which is the one I want to exclude from a backup copy. this only highlights the choices in Yellow. are they excluded or is there more I need to do to make the choice show red?

Use the "Tabular view" at the top of the screen. It is much easier to see what is excluded in that view. I find it difficult to see from the Normal View screen.

Watch those big backups. There is a 2 Gb limit on a backup file size under a 32 bit operating system. Also, if you have both components installed, Akeeba does not automatically exclude JoomlaPack's Output folder, you have to do it manually. :)

Great, thanks I excluded the joomlapack renamed backup folder and my backup is now 1.38gb. I am a bit confused on the exact choice to make with each exclusion. exclude directory toggle, skip sub directory toggle, skip files toggle.? to get the back up down to 1.38 gb I toggled all three

Exclude directory contents would be for something like a cache folder. The folder itself is required for your restored site, but the contents are not. Exclude directory is for your video folder when it is just too big to back up. You need to back it up and restore it manually, via ftp. I can't think of a good example of skip sub directory, but it is another level of exclusion. :)

The truth is that everything on the site is there for a reason and you have to be careful about excluding it. If it is excluded from your backup, you need to back it up via ftp or some other method. It is possible to have a site backup larger than 2 Gb. You have to split the archive file into parts that are less than 2 Gb each. Kickstart won't extract an archive with a total size greater than 2 Gb at this time, you have to use eXtract to extract a jpa file.
