I have tried to get the CRON to run my backup script but it keeps stopping and from the administrator Joomla backend, Akeeba shows that the backup failed. I am trying to run the altbackup.php. I can run the script mannually from the command line while logged in the backend using PuTTY but it will not run the same script using CRON. Here is the CRONTAB script:

30 0 * * * /usr/bin/php5 ......./administrator/components/com_akeeba/altbackup.php

I have tried working with my host, 1and1, but they seem clueless. Any suggestions?

Some things you can expect from 1and1 support, some things you can't. If you are having trouble calling the script in the CRON job, they should be able to help. You can pretty much expect them to be clueless about Akeeba, that's a little outside their job description. :)

The way you have called the script looks right. You may be running into a timeout restriction on the CRON job. I'll have to flag this for Nicholas and have him look at this.

I have been workng with 1and1 support but they have not been to forthcoming on the system time-out issue. Hopefully I can find some way to get the automatic backup to work. I find it odd that I can run the script manually but CRON times it out.

They have a peculiar CRON system. If their server's load is high, it will kill the script instantly. You have to ask them to put your account to the safe scripts list. If they are not willing to do that, there is pretty much nothing you can do.
