TIAB
Just installed Akeeba Backup 3.1.b1 - only change made to copy default profile and amend file paths and then clicked backup. Seemed to be going nowhere so ftp to folder and (as I write) there are now over 400 jpa files of 19bytes being created and increasing! There is no option to cancel the backup only the usual 'Please do not browse to another page unless you see a completion or error message. ' What next?!

TIAB
after 521 x 19byte files created just hot the back button and got myself a backup error - not the best way of cancelling a backup but it works! Then deleted the 521 files.
Also FYI when the default profile was 'copied' the Akeeba BackUp in the Components menu no longer expands. After deleting the 'amended' profile menu still does not expand.
Tried another backup with default profile and same 19byte file loop - quit after 13 files!
Looks like an uninstall and back to a previous version!

Seems that I have the same issue. Starting the backups hangs during the first step: Initalizing... and produces a lot 1KB file until I stopped the process.

Settings: Joomla 1.5.20, PHP 5.2.9, Windows IIS 6

No uninstall is necessary. Sometimes junk files may get stuck on the temporary directory and cause the issue you mention. Just remove all akeeba*.php files from the temporary directory and retry backup. It should now work.

Only one tmp file (akeeba_backend.php) deleted and makes no differnece. Have just seen a new release so will give it a try and report back.

TIAB
Downloaded 'upgrade' (manually as the upgrade within AB does not work) and installed - but still shows release 22-8-10 whereas exepected 23-8-10. Backup still loops. Is there actulally a differnce in releases? odd that you would keep same release number i.e. 3.1.b1?

trevorsm
I am seeing the same thing - Installed 3.1.b1 using the Joomla installer as the Akeeba 'Upgrade' option did not work. Did a manual backup which seemed to go on forever. Checked the backup folder and there were several hundred 22byte files.

@TIAB The update option is broken after our server upgrade. I am currently working on that. The latest release as of this writing is 3.1.b1, released on August 22nd 2010.

@Trevor Did you try to clear everything in the tmp directory? Stale akeeba*.php files will certainly cause this issue.

Hi Nicholas
I have just tried again. There were 2 files in the tmp folder (akeeba_backend.php dated today and akeeba_frontend.php also dated today). I deleted these files and ran the backup again and the same happened - loads of 27Byte files.

Hi
I try this last releasea on a test site :
trying upgrade from control pannel get the following :
* UNKNOWNARCHIVETYPE
* Could not extract the update package. Please check your Joomla! temporary directory permissions or try installing the upgrade package manually.

doing manual upgrade package run fine (except date difference in version between 2010-08-22 and 2010-08-23)
Loop during initializing the backup creates some php file in the temp directory
after deleting these files the same happend

Joomla! 1.5.20 Stable
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
Apache2
PHP Version 5.2.8-1hardy~ppa1

thanks

Nicholas this may be a bug in the upgrading from 3.0.1 pro to 3.1.b1-pro?
I have just uninstalled AB completely and then did fresh install 3.1.b1-pro. With an oootb install and immediate backup there were no loops or errors.

TIAB
Nicholas, also after the fresh install AB is no longer saying an upgrade is available as it was saying before. Not sure if anyone else was getting the same 'upgrade available' optin along with the backup loop issue?

@trevorsm There are some database changes between 3.0 and 3.1.b1. Akeeba Backup tries to apply these changes to your database, but it is possible that your database user doesn't have the ALTER TABLE privilege, causing the database update to fail. In this case, you can try uninstalling and reinstalling Akeeba Backup. If this doesn't succeed, please post back so that I can give you some manual instructions on how to do that.

@frdt Updates are broken since our server update yesterday. Please download the ZIP package and install it manually on top of your existing Akeeba Backup installation.

Yes, I saw this as well.

TIAB
Just for info - the updating link within AB now seems to work (even though obviously up to date!) - looks like server problem fixed.

There are database changes between 3.0 and 3.1. The installation procedure tries to apply them, but it is possible that your database user doesn't have the ALTER TABLE privilege. Uninstalling Akeeba Backup, then installing again fixes those issues. You should contact with your host and ask them why your DB user doesn't have these privileges.

There have been two server problems with the updates. The first one had to do with the permanent "upgrade available" message. This one is fixed. The other one has to do with Pro upgrades. I am still working on it.

Hi
For me, after uninstalling AB and doing a fresh install, I always get the same error with "initializing backup process"

thx

TIAB
Cheers for info Nicholas although haven't checked priviliges as all now seems ok and guess I would consider this one closed from my pov. Thanks.

not sure if it makes any difference but when you uninstalled did you check and delete the 'media/com_akeeba' directory (seems to get left during uninstall?

trevorsm
but it is possible that your database user doesn't have the ALTER TABLE privilege

The user has ALTER TABLE priviledge so it looks like I need to do a fresh install but it might have to wait until tomorrow now.
Out of interest, I tried using Akeeba Remote which used to work OK but I now get an error message:
XML-RPC layer error: TResult.GetString - Item is not a string type
I guess it's related to the other problem.

@frdt OOTB = "out of the box". I think that your problem might be different than the original poster's. Do you get countless files in your output directory, too?

@TIAB Yes, privileges are very elusive. We don't deal with them a lot in the normal course of maintaining a website, until the time we need to upgrade the database tables of a component :(

@trevorsm The remote issue is related to the overall backup failure. If the backup hangs you get this error in Remote Control. Try a fresh install and tell me if this solves this issue.

On my test site (for validation only of new soft), I have uninstall the beta version Akeeba Backup Professional 3.1.b1 and install Akeeba Backup Professional 3.1.b2. On this site backup is well functionning
On an very light site in production, upgrade form manager fail, installing from package Akeeba Backup Professional 3.1.b2, is well done but .. backup loop and in the tmp directory I just have one file akeeba_backend.php
I also try to clear the tmp directory before reintalling all component

thx again for your job

I wait for a more stable release before installing on my other sites

Did you uninstall Akeeba Backup before upgrading on the production site? The usual problem with upgrading is that the MySQL user doesn't have ALTER TABLE privileges and the update doesn't install properly.

No
After error upgrading from the net I directely upgrade from package downloaded from AB site without uninstall...I think ( and go to verify), my sql user have all privileges on the database for the site
thx

frdt
I just verify, but my user has full priviliegs on the databses, after uninstalling the 2 tables (jos_ak_profiles and jos_ak_stats are well removed) when I reinstall I just go to configuration to save the default configuration, I also verified that the 2 tables are also created in the db.. And .. same loop error during initializing.. One file is created in temp dir as in the post above

thx

Can you send me a PM with Super Admin details to your site? It's the only way for me to figure out what's going on and fix it.

I logged in on your site using Firefox 3.6.8 running on Windows 7 Home Premium with quite a lot of browser plugins installed (but I deactivated NoScript for your site to avoid conflicts). I logged in using the French language. I discovered that I can still read French quite easily after all those years :p

The backup works fine, as you can see when you log in to your site and go to Administer Backup Files. I would strongly suggest trying from a different PC using a clean copy of Portable Firefox to rule out interference from any browser plugins you may have on your PC. I also strongly suggest not using WiFi, 3G or any other kind of wireless Internet connection as they are known to cause connection stability problems which may lead to unexpected results on Javascript-intensive applications like Akeeba Backup, Gmail, etc.
