I just installed Akeeba Backup Pro 3.1.b2, over an older version, and I can't backup due to this error:

"Can't modify configuration after preparation of finale"

I don't know what that means. The component says "Akeeba is ready to backup your site" and everything looks OK, but I get that error, both on the site and via Remote Control. I'll attach the log. What does it mean?

Thanks.

Still stuck -- I un-installed the new version and re-installed 3.0 just to make sure that one worked, and it does, no problem. So it's some setting in 3.1.b2 that's different, but I don't know what.

The ALTER TABLE commands in the upgrade of 3.1.b2 are not working properly on some servers. You can uninstall your 3.0 version and then install 3.1.b2. The clean install will solve the problem.

Dale - I also had this problem. I upgraded to b1 first and had this issue - so checked the forum.
Following that I uninstalled (and lost my config in the process) and installed b2.
Same problem - can no longer do backups?

We are working on a beta 3 which will solve some Javascript issues which seem to cause this issue. In the meantime, we have published a developer's release (think of it as the release candidate of beta 3) which you can install on your site and retry backup. It should resolve this issue. Please give us your feedback upon installing it. Thanks!

Thanks, Nicholas. I un-installed Akeeba, installed the developer's release, and did have more success -- both locally and on the server I was able to perform a backup successfully. I'm still getting the same "preparation of finale" error when I try to use Remote Control on the site on the server though. I checked all the settings in Remote Control and can't see what the issue is.

I'm OK for now since I can either use the developer's release or go back to an older version of Akeeba, but I'll attach the log file from the Remote Control failure in case that helps you.

Thanks!

P.S. I meant to also tell you that Dale's suggestion -- un-installing prior versions (so no Akeeba installed) and then installing 3.1.b2 -- didn't help, same error with backups either from the site itself or from Remote.

Just to confirm, are you getting this error message with developer's release 231?

Yes, I just double-checked. With svn231 installed, I can backup from the site itself, but not via Remote for some reason.

Is it possible to PM me Super Admin access to your site? I would really like to take a look myself as I can't reproduce this issue here.

Thank your for the Super Admin information. The problem is trivial. You have completely removed your site's XML-RPC gateway (the entire xmlrpc directory, or at least some of the files in there). Just take the latest Joomla! 1.5.20 installation package file, extract it locally and upload the entire xmlrpc directory and all of its contents to your site's root. This will, of course, do the trick.

Thanks for checking but that's not it. There is an xmlrpc directory, and it has the same files in it that my other Joomla sites have.

I tested by removing svn231 and re-installing Akeeba Pro 3.0 and it backs up fine via Remote -- without any changes to the xmlrpc directory. It has to be something with the developer's release.

I'm just going to stay on 3.0 for now I guess.

When I tried accessing your site's xmlrpc/index.php page through a browser I got a 404 error. How can this be if the directory is there? At this point, no Akeeba Backup has run yet. I have to access the generic Joomla! XML-RPC server, then query its services, then try to run an Akeeba Backup specific service. Until this last point, it's just Joomla!. It can't be possible that it doesn't work in the morning and it magically works in the afternoon! The only explanation is that you accidentally gave me login access to another site than the one which had a problem with SVN231.

Hmmm, maybe you were looking in the root, which doesn't run Joomla. The Joomla installation is one directory below the root. No big deal as I said, I can use an older version of Akeeba for now.

Thanks!

I get this same error on two websites, but all is well on 4 other websites I manage. All 6 websites are on the same dedicated server. I'll try the developer release.

Can I add to this. I'm also having the problem. Alter Table is something a lot of shared hosts don't enable as standard if that's why it isn't working. In my case I can request it but I'd have to do so for all the many sites I back up so it really isn't a practical answer. Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't work either though.

The development version does work though!

Thanks

Andrew

The development version, unlike 3.1.b2, doesn't use ALTER TABLE when you do a clean installation. Anyway, I find the host's policy of not giving ALTER TABLE permissions to be absolutely stupid. For starters, they allow you to create and drop (irrevocably delete!) tables, but not modify them? Huh?! Anyway, the only workaround is the clean installation, which is far from what I'd call "perfect" but I can't do much about it :(

I am having similar problems. Earlier in the week I upgraded to Pro 3.1.b2 from, I think, Pro 3.0.b2. Backups failed with red bars across the screen and "Backup Failed" and the message "Can't modify configuration after the preparation of Packing". I saw others were having problems here and waited for the new release which I installed. First, as an upgrade: still got the error. Then I uninstalled the component. However, this failed saying it couldn't remove the admin folder. I removed this manually and then did a clean install. I still get the error message when I try to backup. Log file attached.

First, try installing 3.1.b3 released just today. If the backup fails again copy and paste the exact error message and ZIP and attach the log file. Do note that after uploading the log file you need to scroll the attachment window to the right and click on the green checkmark to actually attach the file to the post.

I've now checked and can confirm the upgrade doesn't work with Alter Table privileges. It is something else going wrong.

Dear Nicholas

Yes, it is definitely the latest version: Akeeba Backup Professional 3.1.b3 (2010-08-27).

Missed how to attach: hopefully it will work this time. Attaching both the zipped error log and a screen shot of the error message.

Andrew and Ian,

I have published a developer's release (SVN240) which should solve both issues you are currently experiencing. This is going to be published as RC1 as it had positive results on everyone else with similar issues. Can you please check it out? If it fails, please PM me Super Admin credentials to your sites so that I can take a look myself and fix it. Thanks!

Seems to have done the trick. Uninstalled the previous version and installed the developer release. Did get the error shown in the attached.

Then could do a backup staright away. Haven't reconfigured yet, but looks good so far.

Many thanks

Ian
