Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? yes
Have I searched the forum before posting? yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? No
Joomla! version: 1.6.4
PHP version: 5.2.12
MySQL version: 5.0.91
Running on Unix
Akeeba Backup version: 3.3.1

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue.

Description of my issue:

I've been working on restoring a site with Akeeba for 2 1/2 days (sob). I get "Could not upload" errors when trying either direct or ftp extraction. I did it the slow way and manually uploaded all files from a zip backup made locally, and extracted locally. (I would have used the .jpa format, but extraction wizard doesn't work on my outdated mac) I installed the site and restored the database and cleaned up the installation folder. The site is showing this

error:Fatal error: PCRE is not compiled with UTF-8 support in /hermes/web11b/b2342/moo.sharpenyourtoolscom/libraries/phputf8/utf8.php on line 49

on a blank page- both front and back end.

I realize this may not be an akeeba issue, but may be my server. I hope it is akeeba- because my host is about as helpful as a tin soldier.

Thanks in advance,

Best,

Andrea

Hi Andrea!

Unfortunately, you are correct. This problem is a server issue, not an Akeeba Backup issue. More specifically, Joomla! is using PHP's PCRE (regular expressions) engine to perform a lot of its functionality. Since Joomla! is a multilingual CMS, it requires UTF-8 support. Unfortunately, whoever built the PHP on your server has probably been hiding under a cave for the last decade, because he didn't enable UTF-8 support for PCRE when compiling PHP.

Please ask your host to recompile their PHP with UTF-8 support for PCRE. If they are unable to do so, you will have to find a different host as Joomla! will be unable to work on this hosting environment.

Darn! Figures!

Well, at least I have a direction to go in, thank you for that!

It's a little weird because the site was working fine on this host, then all of a sudden it was displaying a handful of problems. Rather that try to tease them all out- I took the Akeeba root, and rolled back to a version I knew had been working. And THAT's because Akeeba Backup is such a swell extension!

Thanks for all your work!

It's not like all server updates rolled out by any given host are always smooth ;) Well, at least you have a backup and you know what you have to ask your host to fix. That's honestly much better than getting stuck with a fully broken site.

Thank you for your kind words :)
