Mandatory information about my setup:

Joomla! version: 1.5
PHP version: (unknown)
MySQL version: (unknown)
Akeeba Backup version: Akeeba Backup Installer 3.3.2

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue.

Description of my issue:
I am restoring a site using kickstart but the process stops at the DB Restore step, with a message:
"The databases.ini file is not present in the sql directory, or is not readable. Database restoration can not proceed. Please check that you have extracted and uploaded all the files and that they have adequate permissions, e.g. 0755."
I have created a database and user giving proper permissions, but still doesn't help.
Can provide more info but don't want to display links to the site for security reasons.
Thanks in advance.

PHP Version = 4.3.10

Akeeba Backup and all related software (Kickstart, Akeeba Backup Installer, etc) require PHP 5.2.7 or later. Are you perfectly sure about your PHP version? If you're using PHP 4.3.10 -which is over 5 years old!- you should not be able to even run the software, let alone get stuck in the restoration phase.

Now, assuming that you do not really have PHP 4.3.10 but at least PHP 5.2, I would first take a look at the installation/sql directory extracted on your site. Do you see a databases.ini file in there? If you do, please change the permissions of the installation/sql directory to 0755 or 0777, then visit http://www.yoursite.com/installation/index.php (do NOT run Kickstart again, as it would reset the permissions you just set!). You should now be able to continue.

If this doesn't help, please try setting the permissions of the "installation" directory to 0777 and visit http://www.yoursite.com/installation/index.php.

If this doesn't help, please double check your PHP version and tell me which is the exact PHP version running on your site.

Ah! You may be right. I took the PHP version info from the "Server Setup Check" (first step of the restore process) page. Under "Required Settings" > PHP Version >= 4.3.10 > Current Setting: Yes -
So I assumed that it was the version but it may not be the case. I will follow the instructions you gave and let you know what happens. Thanks so much for your quick response!
