Joomla! version: 1.7.1
PHP version: 5.2.13
MySQL version: 5.0.91
Host: hosthere
Akeeba Backup version: 3.3.3Pro

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue.

Description of my issue:
I have Joomla 1.7.1 installed and installed 3.3.3Pro akeebabackup. I then received an email to say there was another version so I clicked on the link in the email but it failed. It asked me to enabel ftp in configuration. I tried to do that but it said configuration.php was unwritebale. I do not have admintools installed at this point.
I then tried to use the update icon within akeeba istself and again the same problem. I have attched the log file as requested.

JFTP: :write: Bad response
Could not save data. Error: Could not write to the configuration file

Hi Alex,

There's a little Joomla! hidden secret here. You have to give the configuration.php file 0777 permissions before enabling the FTP option in Global Configuration. But don't worry! Once the FTP mode is active, the configuration.php file will be overwritten and its permissions changed to 0444.

Ok. I changed the permissions on the configuration.php to 777 and then tried to update and got the following error message. I also noticed that the permissions have not revereted back to 444

Downloading the update package failed. Make sure that your temp-directory is writable or that you have enabled Joomla!'s FTP options in your site's Global Configuration.

If your server doesn't support the CHOWN extension to the FTP grammar (many don't) the permissions are not changed. You can always try changing them manually to 0644 or 0664.

OK, regarding the update issue. Go to Components, Akeeba Backup. Click on the Component Parameters. You will see a Download ID field. Pause. Go to AkeebaBackup.com, log in and click on My Subscriptions. Look below the list of your subscriptions. Find the Download ID and copy it. Back to Akeeba Backup's window, paste the Download ID to the same named box and click on Save. Click the Update Found button. Click on Refresh update information. The page reloads. In the download URL you should see that it is suffixed by ?dlid=yourDownloadIDHere. Now you can click on Update now.

This procedure is only required once. From now on, Akeeba Backup will use the configured Download ID and should have no problem unless you change your password on AkeebaBackup.com, in which case the Download ID changes.

Nicholas, that worked fine now ! Sorry, I was still using my password id of old instead of the id I collect from my user account on akeeba. Once again you deliver the answer in full and maybe if I read more I would learn more before I bother you. As always, the suppport rocks !

Nicholas, may I ask why index.php appears in this sites url - http://www.sizzlingpalate.com/index.php/download-menu Normally index.php does not show.

That's something you configure in your site's Global Configuration. Set use Apache (.htaccess) to Yes and it should disappear.

That is what I thought! See the settings in the attached. Admins does not show index.php in the url but the front end does. Could it be anything to do with my host setting up the site incorrectly?

Alex, as I said in my previous post, set "Use URL rewriting" to Yes. In the screenshot you posted it is set to "No".

Every time you change something in the Global Configuration you have to clear the cache. And, of course, this is not mentioned anywhere in the docs either :D
