Description of my issue:

I use Akeeba Backup/Kickstart restore to clone the live site to a test site periodically, which is also backed up. With a recent change to Backup (not sure which one), the backup directory in the test site was changed to [DEFAULT_OUTPUT] after the restore (the live site is [ROOTPARENT]/backups). It used to preserve the backup directory.

This is a deliberate change in Akeeba Backup 7.4 and later. The case where someone transfers a site and could no longer take backups because the output directory is no longer valid was far more common than needing to preserve the backup output directory. What we do now is that we check the backup output directory when you visit the control panel page and change it back to the default backup output directory if the one you specified does not exist or is not writeable.

The corollary to that is that you can create a directory called backups in the parent directory of your localhost restored site before restoration. This means that the [ROOTPARENT]/backups directory is valid after restoration and will not be changed. This is the approach I am using for restoring my own sites locally.

That makes eminent sense. Thanks.
