Description of my issue:

Trying to run automated back via cron job.

Back up fails but I can't see what the problem is?

How can i check what caused the failure? I can't see anything in the log that indicates the problem

Hello,

can you  please share the way you're triggering such automated backup? I'd wish to review the exact command (I've made this ticket private)

HI Davide,

Thank you for taking time to look at this.

Our Hosting supplier IONOS have a cron job manager. To run the cron jobs you put the command in a file on your Joomla web space and then IONOS's job manager executes that job.

I have put a series of screen shots and pdf's to show you the set up and execution in the attached zip file.

Kind regards

David

Strange, for some reason I attached the zip file, it appears to upload it , but then it is not there.

I will try another way.

Please bear with me.

Ok I have put the file on my private google drive. You should be able to download the zip file

Thank you very much for the documents, I was able to review them.

The problem is caused by your host, which allows a direct call to a specific PHP file. However, you can't use the CLI backup script since it doesn't run from command line, and you can't use the frontend backup feature since it won't follow the redirects (and most likely is going to timeout).

I was able to successfully complete a backup using the WGET command, sadly that's not possible from your host command panel. Your only solution is to use an external computer (or service, like WebCron.org) to trigger your frontend backups.

Davide,

Thank you for reviewing this for me...Much appreciated. I will take up the issue with my hosting provider.

Please keep the ticket open until I hear back from them.

Kind regards

David

Ok,

The problem was with the Hosting Provider (IONOS). Their cron job manager does not support CLI commands!

So, we have to use the CRONTAB file edited using Putty (a Windows editor).

I Now have it working.... Thanks

It might be an idea to put a note about IONOS and CLI commands in the Akeeba Documentation to save other clients of IONOS from the problems I have.

I can supply the links to their (IONOS) documentation if that would be useful.

Kind regards

That's great, I'm happy you solved the issue.

Some time ago we started to write down instructions for some specific hosts, but the problem is maintaining them. From time to time hosts will update their interfaces, setups or features, so tracking them all is too much time consuming.

We got pretty skilled to understand the symptoms, so it's way faster for us to give you a promptly solution (whoever is the host) instead of maintaining such documentation.

Hi Davide,

Yes, I can understand that keeping up with hosting companies and their features would be a nightmare.

Happy for you to make this ticket public though in case any other IONOS client comes across the same problem. It might save them some time particularly in my experience IONOS support is not the best.

Kind regards and thanks again for your help
