When I set the output directory as I normally do, I got a red message saying Output directory was un-writable. Your message suggested typing [DEFAULT_OUTPUT] in the configuration. That allowed me to make a download BUT , I don't know where to find the jpa file in order to download it. Where would that be?
Also my original folder "backups" had a 755 permission so I shopuld have not have gotten that message right?
Thank you for your time.

I had some trouble finding it too. The default output folder for WordPress is /wp-content/plugins/akeebabackupwp/app/backups.

The 755 permission should be fine.
