Tried to upgrade and got a message: The following error occurred: unintelligible characters (happy faces, zap ding bats, etc). When to exercise Akeeba and got a White Screen. If you could point me to a trouble shooting resource, that would be great. All I've found was Joomla! materials. Thx. Perhaps just upload manually and replace? Trying to avoid losing config, but will if that's the only answer, I will.

It certainly sounds like an interesting error message. I don't think I've seen that one. But I think a manual update is the answer. The instructions are here:
