Hi Nicholas,

I have been reviewing Akeeba solo documentation and I have noticed the warning about PrestaShop latest releases.

I manage several PrestaShop sites and I'm a bit involved in this CMS too and I would like to know a bit more about the issues.

I understand that you stopped offering Restoration scripts due to the changes in latest releases, but Akeeba Solo as generic script backup solution can work pretty well for Akeeba Solo from my point of view.

From my experience, for most 1.7 shops, just replacing urls in database and settings the parameters file, you are good to go. For others you probably need to clean /var/cache, but that's all.

I'm probably missing something, so can you please give me some details of the chanllenges and issues you faced in 1.7?

Please let me stress the fact that I'm not requesting you support PrestaShop in Akeeba Solo (though I would love to), but just want to know a bit more about the issues you faced as I really want to use Akeeba Solo to backup my PrestaShop installations.

Best!!

It's been a very long time since we removed PrestaShop support. I couldn't tell you within any degree of accuracy.

If I recall correctly, it was something about the format of the configuration files being pure PHP files without a predefined structure which made it very difficult if not impossible to correctly parse without going to ridiculous lengths with the PHP tokenizer. At the same time we had too few people using CMS other that Joomla and WordPress which didn't justify the development time.

As you said the generic installer for bespoke sites works just fine. You just have to make a few changes in the configuration files and database.

Thank you very much for your reply!!

You confirm what I have noticed in my experience ;)

I do not have to deal with angry customers using the product, but maybe you could relax a little bit the warning in the documentation and just suggest using Solo for backups with the generic php restauration script. To be honest, it scared me a little bit ;) . In any case as you mention, it's not your main focus so why bother ;)

Just another piece of thought: there are not that many PrestaShop modules doing backups easily for users out there, and though PrestaShop user is not as technical as Joomla user, maybe it's a good market to explore ;)

Best!!

PS: BTW. For me Akeeba Solo is the best option for PrestaShop backups and I love it!!!

I am trying to set the expectations right. In the past the warnings were toned down a lot and people would misunderstand it as it being equivalent to using, say, ANGIE for WordPress sites but for any other kind of site which would magically be reconfigured. I had a few very confused people with Prestashop sites which is why I had to make the admonitions much stronger.

I know that PrestaShop is definitely a market. It's very popular in Europe. Most of the Greek shops I've seen are implemented with PrestaShop. It took over VirtueMart's market. I'm pretty sure that's how you ended up there, too :p The only problem I've seen is that, as you said, it's mostly non-technical users. This would require us publishing an Akeeba Backup for PrestaShop. I'm still not entirety convinced it makes business sense. It's definitely something on my long tail to-do list but requires more research. Right now I'm kept too busy with Joomla 4 :/
