I'm trying to run kickstart.php on an IIS site whose home directory is normally a "wwwroot" subdirectory. So, the URL is http://my.domain.com/kickstart.php. It runs but won't find our zipped, backed up Joomla site even though it is in the same directory. If we put the kickstart.php and the ZIP file in a subdirectory (http://my.domain.com/joomla/kickstart.php), for example, it works fine. It also works if we change the actual home directory. We have checked permissions over & over. Anybody have any ideas?

Kevin,

It looks like kickstart may be having some trouble figuring out where the root folder is. I'll ask Nicholas to take a look at this one.

IIS is known for screwing up a LOT of PHP's URL and absolute directory determination techniques. I am aware that this may happen, but I have not found a practical solution yet.
