I've completed the backup and uploaded the .jpa file to the new server. I've also uploaded all the kickstart files needed. From everything I've read, it seems like you have to swap over servers before you can access kickstart. I'm not changing domain names so just typing in www.mysite.com shouldn't work right? Is there anything you know of that can help me initiate kickstart without having to propagate the dns servers first. I'd like to save that for last to avoid downtime. Thanks for all your help.

Your new server account may be accessible via a numeric IP address. That shouldn't give kickstart or the installation script any trouble. If you have a temporary address containing a tilde (~), that will give the restore problems.

Yea, my temporary site access according to my server host has the tilde in it. So is there any other way to do this or will I regrettably have some down time?

I think that a manual restore is the only work around for a path with a tilde. I'll flag this for Nicholas to be sure.

Kickstart should work with these settings. The actual restoration procedure, however, may not work. You can always try. If you get a server error, there are two methods to restore your site:
1. Use the emergency manual restoration.
2. Use an unused domain name of your portfolio and attach it to the new hosting account. Wait for the DNS to propagate (it usually takes just a few minutes on quality hosts) and use this temporary domain name to perform the restoration. As soon as the restoration is over, transfer the proper domain name to this new hosting account, so that when the DNS changes propagate all traffic will be directed to the new host.

That second idea is brilliant! I didn't even think of that. Thanks!

You're welcome! As they say, necessity is the mother of invention. I had the same issue as you and came up with this workaround. Simple solutions work the best ;)
