Hi guys, I get the following error when trying to back up my site:
XML RPC layer error TResult GetString Item is not a string type

I have never been able to update using Akeeba Remote backup, however through the backend it does work.

Please help?

Thaaank you.

Can you post the Akeeba Remote Control log (after backup attempt, left then right click on the site's name, View Log, Save as Text) and the Akeeba Backup debug log (from the component's Control Panel page click on View Log)? These will tell me what happened both on your PC and your server during backup time and I can help you solve the problem.

I don't know why it says JoomlaPack I'm 100% sure I used Akeeba Backup plugin.

The XML-RPC method namespace is common between JoomlaPack and Akeeba Backup, that's why it says joomlapack.*, don't worry about that. The problem is that the backup crashed on your site. I also need the other half of the story, the backup log from the Akeeba Backup component, to figure out why it crashed. Just download it to your disk, put it in a ZIP file and attach it here.

Please find attached the back end log for Akeeba.

The log is complaining about the location of the tmp folder. Open Akeeba's Configuration screen and put "[SITEROOT]/tmp" in the tmp folder path, without the quotes. Save and try the Remote backup again. That should stop the back end backup too.

I tried this as well, as well as the other suggestions, but it still isn't working. All the settings are correct.

One thing I did notice is that it stopped working on sites where I upgraded Akeeba to 3.1.rc1. Other sites where I haven't done the upgrade yet work perfectly.

I'm using version 2.5.0.36 of Remote - could it be that it';s simply not compatible (yet) with the 3.1rc1 version of Akeeba?

Are you using the new version of plg_jpremote for Akeeba Backup 3.1?

I'm using the one here: http://www.akeebabackup.com/official/akeeba-remote-control.html

It says 2.5, and that's the only one in that category...

Please, read my question again. I did not ask you which version of the Remote Control application you have installed on your PC. I asked you which plugin (plg_jpremote) you have installed on your site. As you can see in the download page you correctly mentioned, there are two different plugins for your site:
1. Remote Control plugin for 3.0 which has a big warning in red background stating "This plugin is obsolete and will only work with Akeeba Backup 3.0.1 or earlier. If you have Akeeba Backup 3.1.b1 or later, DO NOT use this file." which means that it NOT what you need.
2. Remote Control plugin for 3.1 which has a big yellow notice box stating "If you have Akeeba Backup 3.1.b1 or later installed on your site, you MUST install this plugin for Remote Control to work at all." which means that this is the one you need to download and install on your site.

So, which one of the two do you have? If unsure, download and install "Remote Control plugin for 3.1" on your site. Using the old plugin with the new release won't work. This is a known limitation which is exactly why there is a new plugin ;)

Thanks, Nicholas! You're right - I misread the question. Grabbed the right file and updated the sites that were causing trouble and... bingo!
