I needed to test my site with a different hosting provider and used Akeeba/Kickstart to archive and clone the master site to the new hosting server (shared). After a few false starts the site restored completely. Nice tool!

All of the pages load correctly when I use the long URL format (manual copy/paste) but clicking on the menus results in a 404 error (SEF Friendly URL's). In the configuation the site is set to SEF URL's. I tried to change the setting but it would not change.

Anyone have any ideas? I did not edit any files after unpacking the site and used the default settings in Kickstart, except for the new host specific items like DB name, etc.

Thanks

If the new host is based on IIS, or if the web server doesn't allow using .htaccess files you can not use the standard SEF URLs. If your new host does use Apache and does allow .htaccess files, make sure that your .htaccess file was restored. By default, it is renamed to htaccess.bak and renamed back to .htaccess when you click on the Clean Up button in Kickstart. If you forgot to do that, you have to rename that file manually. Moreover, the last few pages of our Quick Start Guide contain more instructions about changes which might be required in configuration.php and/or .htaccess for SEF URLs to work properly, i.e. the $live_site parameter and the RewriteBase directive.

Thanks Nicholas. I'll look at the items you mentioned to see if I can find something amisss and post the results back here.

Would the inability to change the configuration parameters give any indication to what is causing the problem? Every time I changed the SEF URL selection to "disable" and saved, the value reverted back to "enable".

That indicates a problem with permissions which is unrelated to the SEF URL issue you are experiencing. The permissions problem can be in most part mitigated by populating and enabling the FTP options in Joomla!'s Global Configuration.
