I've a problem with my site (www.thefloatingrumshack.com) - where the menu bar should be, I've an error message. My plan is to use Fantastico to upgrade the joomla installation from 1.5.9 to 1.5.20 or whatever the latest version is by the time I'm brave enough to hit the button.

I've made a back up of the site using Akeeba [very easy process] and downloaded to my local PC.

I'd like to know that my backup will work, so that when I run the above upgrade - I'm reasonably confident that should things go badly, I'm OK (ish).

Using Kickstart, the local extraction installation stalls when I get the following message:

“Could not connect to database. Please check your connection parameters.”

I’m happy that the username is right etc, but am now at a bit of a loss to understand what is going on. Can anyone help please?

There is a password on the actual page – it’s just not come through on the PDF

Your host is running PHP 5.3.3. Most Joomla! extensions and templates do not support it properly and throw out the error I can see on your site. Please contact your template provider and ask them for a version of the template compatible with PHP 5.3.3. Your site is correctly restored, it's just the template not supporting the PHP version on your server :)

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks for the tip - that's great - it gives me a lead on how to solve the website issue.

I've not backed up anything before and so was trying to restore on my local PC. It's locally that I'm getting the extraction problem "could not connect to database".

Any tips there?

It's as it says in the documentation and our Quick Start Guide. Create a database on your local server using phpMyAdmin first. When restoring the site, when you see the Restore DB page replace the connection information with the connection information for the new database you created. Clicking Next should use the new settings and the restoration should proceed.

If you have not done already, please download and read our Quick Start Guide for more information.
