 On the webpage to download Backup, it shows this:
This version requires PHP 5.3 or 5.4 and Joomla! 2.5.6+ or 3.2.x.

There is no Joomla 2.5.6... there is and

I am in the US.

The current version of Akeeba Backup requires Joomla! 2.5.6 or greater. So it will run on the most current Joomla! 2.6.17.
