I don't think this is an Akeeba problem, but it's got me stumped and I'm hoping that you may have some suggestions.

The site is Joomla 2.5.19. When it was originally installed it was 2.5.14 and it has only been upgraded to 2.5.19 yesterday. When it was 1.5, I used to update Joomla via Admin Tools, and as it has never shown a Joomla upgrade available in Admin Tools, I never upgraded it.

Since it was installed, its been working fine and I never did anything to it, but for some reason reCaptcha stopped working. Last week I tried to Upgrade it, but the Upgrade option wasn't visible in Components. I went into Extension Manager --> Manage and found the Joomla Upgrade module, but it had a little padlock on Status field (as did a whole lot of other things). I tried Enable, but I get a message "Edit state is not permitted". I refreshed the cache. I tried using Admin Tools to check permissions. I looked in the database to make sure that admin is still a Super User and it is.

I posted a query on the Joomla Forum, and they said I should upgrade to 2.5.19 - I did this manually, but it still is the same. The only other thing I get from the Joomla Forum is the inane comment that I am not logged in a Super User or I have forgotten my password!!!

In desperation, I went restored the backup. It's a big site and it takes hours, but it's still the same.

I tried restoring the original Backup when the site was first created but it seems that this hasn't changed since the original installation.

It's a huge site and it will take weeks to restore all the music if I have to start over. I'm haoping that you might be able to point me to the cause of the problem.

Sorry if this is out of Admin Tools remit, but I'm desperate.

Hello Henry,

first of all, don't worry: as last restort you can create a new Super Admin user with a script, so you won't be locked out.
However, let's try if we can figure out what happened.
Can you please post your PHP version?

Ok, I just looked better on your issue, and things are way simpler.
You are seeing the padlock because Joomla prevents you to disintall core components (doing so you will blow up your site).

Please follow these steps:
  1. Install Admin Tools 2.6.2
  2. Take a backup of your site VERY IMPORTANT!
  3. Update Joomla manually. Download the update package from this page. Go to Extensions, Extension Manager and use the Upload & Install to install the Joomla! update ZIP file as if it was a regular extension (yes, I know, but it really DOES work!!!)

Please remember that Admin Tools no longer performs Joomla! updated itself.
If you want, you can install our free Akeeba CMS Update, but please note that this requires Joomla! 2.5.15 or later; that's why you need to manually update to 2.5.19 first.

I have installed the Joomla update already, before you even suggested it. I have also updated Admin Tools.

Unfortunately NOTHING has changed. The padlock remains and I still get the same error message.

I have no idea what is wrong. I have 4 other sites all using Joomla 2.5.x and this is the only one that is giving a problem.

Not sure what happened to the message, but basically I did all of that and nothing changed!

What you are reporting is the expected behavior: the padlock and the edit error are displayed in order to prevent you to unistall/disable core features that will break your site.
You are not supposed to touch them.
