EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

I once installed Akeeba 8 on J3 which was wrong. Your support said I should leave it, since I can't remove it. It did not bother me till today. I wanted to create a new backup, but I get the following message:

🚨 Please complete your migration to Akeeba Backup 9 🚨

Please click on Components, Akeeba Backup for Joomla!™, Control Panel to open Akeeba Backup 9's interface.

Follow the instructions shown in Akeeba Backup 9 to migrate your settings and backups from Akeeba Backup 8 to Akeeba Backup 9.

After you are done migrating please uninstall Akeeba Backup 8.

I am still on J3.

What can I do?

Thank you!

Um, you can not receive this message on Joomla 3. The condition for displaying this message is that the Joomla version reported by Joomla itself through the system-wide JVERSION constant is equal to or higher than 3.999.999.

It sounds like you had tried to upgrade to Joomla 4, messed something up and then tried to restore a backup in place without removing the existing site's files first. Do note that our documentation explicitly states that this will cause problems. See https://www.akeeba.com/documentation/akeeba-backup-documentation/restoring-backups.html#general-guidelines under “Do not try to overwrite one Joomla! version family with a different one”.

> I once installed Akeeba 8 on J3 which was wrong. Your support said I should leave it, since I can't remove it.

No, we were NOT wrong. What you stated here is wrong.

Akeeba Backup 8 is fully supported on Joomla 3.10 and is, indeed, the version of our backup software you need to use on Joomla 3.10. It's still maintained and supported.

Akeeba Backup 8 is also the “bridge” version which is minimally compatible with Joomla 4 for the purpose of updating your site. You can leave it installed on your site before updating to Joomla 4, so as not to lose your backup archives and backup settings. Upon upgrading to Joomla 4 and trying to access it you will see the message to upgrade to Akeeba Backup 9, the process of which is: install Akeeba Backup 9, go to Akeeba Backup 9, click the Migrated button, uninstall Akeeba Backup 8. We really can't make it simpler than that, considering that the only common thing between Akeeba Backup 8 and 9 is the backup engine, everything else is rewritten from scratch.

Finally, if you really want to, you CAN uninstall Akeeba Backup 8 from Joomla 3 just like any other extension. If you do not know how to uninstall extensions from Joomla 3 we have documented it here: https://www.akeeba.com/documentation/akeeba-backup-documentation/uninstalling.html

Hi, thank you for your reply.

Of course this is Joomla 3.10.8 – please trust me that I know which version I have. There was no attempt to migrate to J4 at all.

Futhermore: I think there was a misunderstanding and an error of me:

> I once installed Akeeba 8 on J3 which was wrong. Your support said I should leave it, since I can't remove it.

I ment I installed Akeeba 9! And "which was wrong" was no attack on YOU but on ME (I installed the wrong version.) So no need to feel offended at all. ;)

So what can I do?

How can I get rid of the new version and have the Akeeba 8 version normal running on my J 3.10.8?

Please see attached screenshot.

OK, now it makes more sense. I saw your screenshot and read your previous tickets.

It looks like you did indeed install both Akeeba Backup 8 and 9 on the same Joomla 3 site. This is what causes the message to appear. If Akeeba Backup 9 (com_akeebabackup) is installed this causes the message to finish the upgrade to appear in Akeeba Backup 8 (com_akeeba). This is a recent change. Back on August 8th, 2021 when you asked me about this you would not get this message that's why I had told you to do nothing at the time.

You will have to uninstall Akeeba Backup 9 to fix this. Uninstalling Akeeba Backup 9 from Joomla 3 is more involved as it's not supported for installation and use on Joomla 3.

First delete folder administrator/manifests/packages/akeebabackup from your site. This is the folder with the installation script of Akeeba Backup 9.

Now go to Extensions, Manage, Manage and remove the Akeeba Backup 9 package extension.

Finally, install Akeeba Backup 8 twice in a row without uninstalling it before or in between.

Thank you so much! It works and I can backup the site again.
