EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

From Joomla extensions updater, the Akeeba Backup entry said the update would be from current version 5.6.0 to 5.6.3. So I clicked update as usual, got the success message. But the version installed is 6.0.0.b1, a beta version. Everything is PROBABLY fine, but this is a live website, and I'd rather only stable versions were installed.

In fact, I keep a development website with the same versions of all the Joomla extensions installed, mainly to test the extension updates before I apply them to the live site.

1) would it be safe/OK for me to upload version 5.6.3 by update > install option?

2) any way I can configure Akeeba Backup updates and/or Joomla update manager to allow only stable versions of extensions to be shown for my consideration?

Perhaps you were in the process of uploading the update to Joomla for website owners to see from update manager, and I did my update right after that process finished? Yet, 10 minutes later, back at my development website, even after cache refresh there is no sign of this version 6.0.0.b1 being available to install. Akeeba there still claims it is up to date.

So, overall, not a big deal, but I'd like you to be aware of this issue and is there anything I should be aware of now that you know?

Cheers,

Hello Carol,

1. Yes, it is. The only major difference between 5.6.3 and 6.0.0.b1 is the use of a difference CSS framework for the interface. The code is the same, only that 6.0.0.b1 has fixes for some minor bugs discovered after 5.6.3 was out. You can safely install 5.6.3 on top of 6.0.0.b1 and use it.

2. It should, by default, only deliver stable versions. Go to Extensions, Manage, Update and click on the Options button in the toolbar. The "Minimum Stability" option should read "Stable". If it reads anything else please change it to Stable and click on Save & Close.

Regarding the update availability, this information comes from Joomla!. As a matter of fact, we are disallowed from implementing our own updater on pain of being removed from 6 months to forever from the Joomla! Extensions Directory (JED) - it's in the JED's Terms of Service. So, we have to rely on the idiosyncratic extensions updater that comes with Joomla!. That's why we have a "reload update information" button in the control panel of our software. Clicking it asks Joomla! to purge its updates cache and fetch it afresh. This SHOULD clear the update notice. If it doesn't, well, you've hit a Joomla bug. If you've enabled cache in Global Configuration it's very likely this will happen to you until you clear your administrator cache (unless you use a cache system such as memcached which doesn't allow immediate purging, in which case things get really funny until you kill the cache with means external to Joomla, but that's not a Joomla issue, it's an issue with the PHP interface to some third party cache servers).
