We are no longer using Akeeba Backup and haven't for a few years. After updating Joomla from 4 to 5, the following display in the Extensions Update area:

Update: Could not open update site #8 "Akeeba FEF", URL: http://cdn.akeebabackup.com/updates/fef.xml Update: Could not open update site #22 "FOF 3.x", URL: http://cdn.akeebabackup.com/updates/fof3_file.xml Update: Could not open update site #64 "FOF 3.x", URL: http://cdn.akeeba.com/updates/fof3_file.xml Update: Could not open update site #72 "Akeeba FEF", URL: http://cdn.akeeba.com/updates/fef.xml   It doesn't seem to affect the ability to update any of our extensions, but it does take a l long time to load the Extensions Update page. Are there files/folders I should delete to get rid of these? The only things with the Akeeba author in our Manage Extensions area are:   file_fef version 2.1.1 (2022-10-23)

file_fof30 version 3.7.4 (2021-02-18)

These are frontend and backend libraries, respectively. They were used in all of our software because, simply put, Joomla 3 was woefully behind the times. Joomla 4 used a lot of the ideas we have introduced in FOF, and finally moved to an up-to-date version of Bootstrap, rendering the purpose of these extensions moot. Therefore, we discontinued them in 2021 without a replacement.

Back in 2021 and 2022, in the Joomla 3 to 4 migration heyday, we did have instructions to uninstall them from your Joomla 3.10 or 4.0 site. These instructions will no longer work. At this point these extensions are 4 years, 2 major Joomla versions, and 4 PHP versions out of date. Their uninstallation script will simply not run anymore.

You can of course remove the update site and delete the media/fef and libraries/fof30 directories, but you will be left with junk entries in the #__extensions table.

Alternatively, you can subscribe to Akeeba Onthos, our extension to manage extensions beyond what Joomla itself can do. With Onthos you can find these extensions, select them, and click on Danger Zone, Forced Uninstall to completely remove them from your site even though Joomla itself can't. Onthos works with any extension. I did not write it to remove leftovers of our extensions, I wrote it because I had leftovers from third party extensions on my sites and I wanted to remove them without having to take a lengthy, complicated, and error-prone manual procedure for each one of them.

Thank you for the detailed response. I do have a few clients still on Joomla 4 with this same issue. Can you please provide me with the steps for uninstalling these on Joomla 4?

Uninstallation is only possible on Joomla 4.0. Uninstall like any other extension.

If your clients are on Joomla 4.4, direct uninstallation may not be possible as it's a version of Joomla which was released 2 years later and some things have changed. Likewise, even if you are on Joomla 4.0 but on a PHP version newer than 7.3 uninstallation may fail because your PHP version is newer than what was supported by these packages.

In this case, you can try removing the following files:

  • administrator/manifests/files/file_fof30/script.fof.php
  • administrator/manifests/files/file_fof40/script.fof.php
  • administrator/manifests/files/file_fef/script.fef.php

Then, try to uninstall FOF and FEF like any other extension.

Thank you, I was able to delete those files and then uninstall on my Joomla 4.4 site.

For the site already updated to Joomla 5, I looked at my database tables and found the following. Can I safely delete these? (I'll take a backup first)

file_fef in _extensions table

Akeeba FEF in _update_sites table (two entries)

I also see that there is a table called _akeeba_common. Should I delete this as well?

Yes about deleting the #__extensions entries.

No about the #__akeeba_common; this table is still used by modern versions of Akeeba Backup, Admin Tools, and Akeeba Ticket System.
