We are considering moving to a new provider. However, they use MariaDB, not MySQL. I have 2 questions:

a) Will Akeeba Backup work with MariaDB?

b) If yes, will the transfer process be seamless, that is, can I take a regular backup with the MySQL database as usual and then restore it in the MariaDB database?

Thank you,

a) Will Akeeba Backup work with MariaDB?

Yes. I am using Arch Linux as my primary development machine. It famously only offers MariaDB since 2013. I still do test with MySQL (running in Docker), but the primary development does take place on MariaDB. The host for my sites, Rochen, has been using MariaDB for years as well. I have done plenty of site transfers between MySQL and MariaDB of various version combinations over the years.

If yes, will the transfer process be seamless, that is, can I take a regular backup with the MySQL database as usual and then restore it in the MariaDB database?

It's mostly seamless. You take a backup with Akeeba Backup on the MySQL-powered server and restore in on the MariaDB-powered server. Depending on the exact versions of MariaDB and MySQL and how they are configured you will very likely have to enable the "Normalise character set" option if you run into issues restoring the backup.
