I enabled the Joomla automatic update feature on several Joomla 5.4.0 and 6.0.0 websites which were all successfully updated to Joomla 5.4.1 and 6.0.1earlier today.

The "System - Backup on update" plugin had also been enabled to ensure backups are run before automatically updating Joomla to the next stable release.

Unfortunately, no backups were run before the Joomla updates.

Can this feature be made to work for automatic Joomla updates in case any updates fail in future?

Thanks.

No, this is not technically possible. Please read https://www.akeeba.com/documentation/akeeba-backup-joomla/backuponupdate-plugin.html for the pitfalls of using Joomla's "automatic updates" feature. The bottom line is, you shouldn't use on anything but the simplest site you can afford to lose and have to restore from the last backup you have on them.
